  3. outside the  New York coast and  Voice
  4. of   Peace  +  Channel 7  outside  the 
  5. Israelian coast.
  6.  Although there are only a few pirates
  7. left on the seas,  there are thousands
  8. of pirate  stations in land,  the land
  9. based pirates.  In the 60's the pirate
  10. radio  moved from the seas to dry land
  11. and soon spread over  Europe,  USA and
  12. many  other  countries  in  the  70's. 
  13. These new pirates operate all over the
  14. world in all possible wavelenghts. You
  15. can hear  them  in FM, MW, SW, CB  and
  16. watch them on your TV.
  17.  The number one country  in  Europe is
  18. Holland, what comes  to pirate  radio.
  19. There are over  15 000 pirate stations
  20. in  Holland,  and  many  of  them  are 
  21. broadcasting  24 hours a day, 7 days a
  22. week.  Also  in other  countries  like 
  23. Ireland,  England   and  West-Germany,
  24. there are hundreds of stations.
  25.  The  big  stations  on  the  sea were 
  26. highly  commercial,   but  these  land
  27. pirates are  usually  'hobby pirates'.

  29. They are often operated  by  young and
  30. enthusiastic   persons  who  are   not
  31. satisfied   with  the  legal  stations
  32. regulated by the authorities. The main
  33. aim  is  to  help  ordinary  people to
  34. understand,  that we  could have  more
  35. different radio stations  in our area.
  36. There  are lots  of  free  frequencies
  37. available.
  38.  Of course  the  authorities  are  not
  39. usually  happy  about  these 'illegal'
  40. stations, and  they try to  close them
  41. down.  Local  post authorities  try to
  42. direct the stations and raid them with
  43. police.  The  fines  can be very high,
  44. but  despite  of that  for  example in
  45. England many stations are raided again
  46. and again,  but the stations only buys
  47. a new  transmitter  and starts  again.
  48. For  example  GRL  in London  has been 
  49. raided over 300 times since 1985!  And
  50. they are still on the air.
