the English coast, Radio New York is
outside the New York coast and Voice
of Peace + Channel 7 outside the
Israelian coast.
Although there are only a few pirates
left on the seas, there are thousands
of pirate stations in land, the land
based pirates. In the 60's the pirate
radio moved from the seas to dry land
and soon spread over Europe, USA and
many other countries in the 70's.
These new pirates operate all over the
world in all possible wavelenghts. You
can hear them in FM, MW, SW, CB and
watch them on your TV.
The number one country in Europe is
Holland, what comes to pirate radio.
There are over 15 000 pirate stations
in Holland, and many of them are
broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. Also in other countries like
Ireland, England and West-Germany,
there are hundreds of stations.
The big stations on the sea were
highly commercial, but these land
pirates are usually 'hobby pirates'.

They are often operated by young and
enthusiastic persons who are not
satisfied with the legal stations
regulated by the authorities. The main
aim is to help ordinary people to
understand, that we could have more
different radio stations in our area.
There are lots of free frequencies
available.
Of course the authorities are not
usually happy about these 'illegal'
stations, and they try to close them
down. Local post authorities try to
direct the stations and raid them with
police. The fines can be very high,
but despite of that for example in
England many stations are raided again
and again, but the stations only buys
a new transmitter and starts again.
For example GRL in London has been
raided over 300 times since 1985! And
they are still on the air.
If you live in a country where land
pirates are common, you can hear them
